Combined population and evolutionary synthesis of galaxy spectra
نویسنده
چکیده
We present our numerical code to perform syntheses of galaxy spectra. Our modified linear simplex algorithm has the advantage that no initial solution is required, the non-negativity for the individual contributions is guaranteed, additional spectral components can be added and individual wavelength regions can be weighted. Synthesizing the observed galaxy spectra with isochrone spectra we determine the age distribution of the stellar component. We demonstrate the accuracy of our method to reconstruct the age distribution of theoretical spectra. Finally, we present evolutionary syntheses of the optical spectra of an elliptical galaxy and of the spatially resolved Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365.

The Ages of Starbursts in Post-starburst Galaxies
We present a new technique for accurately determining the ages of starbursts in post-starburst galaxies. In particular, it uses the strength of the Ca II H + H absorption feature relative to that of Ca II K to separate the e ects of burst strength from burst age in a spectrum comprised of a post-starburst population and an underlying old galaxy population. The technique is based on comparing th...
متن کاملThe Star Formation Histories of Galaxies: a Tour through the Starlight-sdss Database
Retrieving the Star Formation History (SFH) of a galaxy out of its integrated spectrum is the central goal of stellar population synthesis. Recent advances in evolutionary synthesis models have given new breath to this old field of research. Modern spectral synthesis techniques incorporating these advances now allow the fitting of galaxy spectra on an Å-by-Å basis. These detailed fits are usefu...
متن کاملMagellanic Cloud Star Clusters as Simple Stellar Populations
Integrated spectra have been obtained of 31 star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds (MC) and of 4 Galactic globular clusters. The spectra cover the wavelength range λλ3500 – 4700 Å at a resolution of 3.2 Å FWHM. The MC clusters primarily cover the age range <10 – 3 Gyr, and hence are well-suited to an empirical study of aging post-starburst stellar populations. An age-dating method is presented ...
متن کاملChemically consistent evolution of galaxies II. Spectrophotometric evolution from zero to high redshift
The composite stellar populations of galaxies comprise stars of a wide range of metallicities. Subsolar metallicities become increasingly important, both in the local universe when going from early towards later galaxy types as well as for dwarf galaxies and for all types of galaxies towards higher redshifts. We present a new generation of chemically consistent evolutionary synthesis models for...
متن کاملMetallicity indicators across the spectrum of composite stellar populations
With a chemically consistent evolutionary synthesis approach we follow the enrichment of individual chemical elements in the ISM. We describe the time evolution of broad band colors U to K and metal indices (Fe5335, Fe5270, Mg2, Mgb), taking into account the increasing initial metallicities of successive generations of stars. Using specific star formation prescriptions for the different spectra...
